We often forget that the jobs they do are often ones that no one else wants to do. And we have druggies on welfare, and a whole host of other people who are citizens, and they work the system to live for free - no work required.
I've watched families walk up the coast after swimming across the inlet between Mexico and California. I've talked to a few of them. All the ones that I've encountered are people just looking for a better life or a better life for their children. I've seen old men who look like they're about to drop, pick up a toddler and run to hide in the rocks (the jetty on the coast) because Border Patrol was coming. And I thought - how much time does he have to enjoy living in the United States? Is it worth it to him? Would he be here by himself? And I really don't think he would have been. He was at the end of his life, trying to make a better life for his children and grandchildren.
I understand that we can't just open up our borders indiscriminately. And I don't have a solution. But before we go complaining about the illegal immigrants, and saying they're taking our jobs, we need to do a little self introspection and look at how many of our own aren't pulling their weight.
I'd rather offer a job to an honest, illegal immigrant, than a lying, lazy American citizen.
