Aly, I'm with you, on the independence trait. My dad was a cop, and my brother is a firefighter - but to me, it's interesting how independence surfaces... my mom was always very independent, but my sister-in-law seemed to grow into it, to become independent more as a result of necessity.
One obvious difference I see though up front, is they however, were not ever absent for months at time - and I would that possibly reintigrating (time and again) would bring it's own set of issues.
Hmmmm, I need to give this more thought...
