The Falklands is still littered with the things even though it has been 23 yrs since the end of the conflict. Where there is a liklihood of contact with people the areas have been cleared. In more remote areas they have identified and marked the areas. We had a lot of guys injured clearing mines so from what I remember the last time the ex was there they took the decision to just mark the areas as exclusion zones.France and Belgium is littered with unexpoded ordanace and every so often you get an idiot on a battle field tour who decides it would be a very good idea to bring one back through the channel tunnel. Needless to say the anti terrorist police dont share the view neither do Euro Tunnel who had to close the tunnel for up to 12 hours before the area was declared safe. When I worked for Kent County Council we took over the old RAF West Malling Airfield which was sold to developers who then complained when a couple of times they found unexploded bombs which had laid undiscovered since WW2. You live in an area that was bombed it is a risk you take. Quite what the develpoers thought the Luftwaffe was dropping on British Airfields during the Battle of Britain I do not know!!!!
