Tom...question about land mines

I was watching something on TV the other day about the disposal of land mines in Afghanistan. And that brought me to this question:

Will countries like Afghanistan ever be safe from land mines? Is it just too hopeful that enough will be found and disposed of to create a safe environment? (And this is assuming that no more are put in place...yes I know dream world I am living in)
