I have to agree with you, Tom.

Reviewing work is not always because you are looking for, or expecting, mistakes. I work in an industry where we are doing sensitve calcluations that people are using for their taxes. We have to have everything reviewed to make sure it is right. Not to say that we can't do the work, just that it is easy to miss little things that can make a big difference and it is always better to have another set of eyes look at it before it goes out.

That said, we have two teams in our company (do slightly different work) but our teams are run by managers that are so different it is unbelievable. One team has lots of independence and control over their work (my team). The other team is totally micromanaged and the administrators (worker bees) have very little control over their work and don't even sign the letters that are sent to their clients. This is because the managers on that team have control issues. The end result is that they have much higher turn-over on their team and the administrators are not happy most of the time. All because the managers feel the need to control everything that goes on.

Personally, I like the style that my team uses. We have great managers that teach us a lot, but they also trust us to do our job properly and take responsibility for ourselves.
