the difference appears to be that the murder hole is over a passage way inside the main gate whereas a machicolation is a hole in the floor of a parapet to drop stuf on people outside the main gate ---if we put as much energy in getting alomng--I mean think of how long it must have taken to build a castle and then to spend all that time putting stuff in to kill people--errych
