I agree—it was not a legitimate question—for exactly the reasons stated—there were several critical virtues and several more that were vital. But, I do think that it is important to take a hard look at the different factors critical and vital to success.
I do not concur that the founders were particularly religious. Some were religious but others were atheists---and I do not recall any of them believe they were being guided by divinity. I agree that the Declaration of Independence is a great document and, a fabulous apology—but it is interesting that as great as it is, it is wholly unbinding!
How do you teach the concept? Well, you start by teaching it from a philosophical point of view instead of a chronology of events. And, I believe you need to develop a national strategy that at least respects and perhaps even embodies those critical and vital virtues
