At work, in order to build an effective team it's pretty critical that you consciously establish and promote a certain culture. The military does this radically well. Ask any military personnel what their motto/core principles are and they can start rattling off verbatim.
(I'm going to admit to opening myself up for a little slamming here, because i'm just thinking this through out loud.)
i'm not sure this is the case with most family units, at least from the perspective of it being entirely proactive and conscious. From my own experience, parents (if that's the leader in the family unit) tend to learn as they go because the experience is new to them and if honest, we're modeling our own upbringing to a certain extent.
(Setting rules and establishing culture are two different things.) If you were to ask me what the culture of my company is I could tell you in a heartbeat. Ask me the same question about my family and I'd have to sit here and think about first.
