Doris Kearns Goodwin's son enlisted after 9/11

She's an historian - very knowledgeable about Lincoln and politics in general. Her youngest son had just graduated from Harvard: a literature major I think.

He enlisted - served four years - awarded a Bronze Star (for serving as a roving decoy with his men, trying to draw snipers).

My point: she has written since then that wars would be handled so differently if there was more of an investment of lives and time and courage by every cross section of society. Her son's story should not unbelievably unusual, but it is.
