Its easier--

and more time efficient. To return the caches to use requires you to collect the cache, transport it, inspect it, seperate good from bad, bring the bad to the demo range and blow it up bring the good to an armory to refurbish--its a pain and it increases risk to the troops--though not by much--in Afghanistan, when I was there, everything got BIPed--blown in place--in Iraq about day 14 into it word came down no more destroy Iraqi weapons, we are going to restore it to use---then the disasemmbled the Army--but, anyway the linked article quoted

"In helping them, we are helping ourselves because the program is saving the U.S. and the [Iraqi Army] money and bringing the country one step closer to being self-sufficient," 420 AKs @$300 minus fuel for transport trucks minus saleries minus repair parts etc---not a bargain--particularly when we are spending billions a day. I'd just as soon destroy them and equip the Iraqis with M-16s from one of our depots--this way it costs us near nothing (M-16 being obsolete), it is a better weapon and when it is captured by insurgents, they have a limited supply of ammunition
