my paternal grandfather was in the cavalry, he served in indonesia, but he died when my father was very young so i know nothing about that.

My maternal grandfather was in the resistance in Holland. He never talked about it, not even his wife knew. We only found out after he died and my mother found the medal that he received from Prince Bernard (The queen's consort) for his service. My mom thinks he might have been a forger but you never know. THey did a lot of things in the underground in Holland including a lot of assassinations. Towards the end of the war, he was rounded up and shipped to a labour camp in Belgium I believe. My mom says that he told her that one day the guards just disappeared. Eventually, the prisoners realized that they weren't coming back and they left too. My grandfather walked all the way back home, only at night. Probably took a week or so. It was another year before the war was over in Holland.

My dad was in the army too, since Holland has mandatory conscription. He was going to stay in but they were going to put him in EOD and he said no thanks. My uncle was career airforce.
