Before I discovered the drinking trick though, I found that just focusing on how many thousands of flights there are every single day and how incredibly small the chance was of anything happening seemed to help. Addtionally, doing crossword puzzles and reading fluff like People or US magazine would occupy my mind.
And also like Maureen, my fear of flying was there long before 9/11, and it hasn't been made worse by any fear of terrorism. Don't know why, but there it is.
