When you hit a compound

like the one described, you set blocking positions at key spots to keep people in and to provide protection for the assault or entry force from outside threats--but you don't have time or people to surround the target prior to the assault force entering, so people who are interested in escaping, not fighting, can "squirt" out between blocking positions.. the rules of engagement changed frequently so you could not always shoot them...they became known as squirters and dealing with them was an important planning consideration
