My ped's a firm believer in the "just cause you could, doesn't mean you should". He spent a lot of time discussing chelation and vitamin and other therapies with me. Showed me in my children why they were not recommended. He has done them before with autistic and non-autistic children. Remember I live in an antique house and I had concerns about lead poisoning. Also he does recommend a one per day childs vitamin with minerals.
His bedside manner may suck, but he's done this 30yrs now, is head ped of my county hosp and has never not provided me with answers and answered a MILLION questions that I've had.
Greg is dairy intolerant and my ped deliberately has me and my boys show up for his student teachers. I have heard EVERY time the comment "removal of dairy and/or gluten is not a treatment for autism". His response "what about the underlying symptoms, the diahhrea, the nightmares and terrors. If the child was not autistic what would be your recommendation" - Answer, diet chgs. Russ is sicker than Greg, and the only reason he has trouble with dairy is b/c since he's been 6mths old he has had very little. So large quantities - glasses of milk - upset his stomach, just like chlorinated water. There are no behavioural or language chgs.
My ped feels that the language gene is damaged - family history. Add in pregnancy problems - high bp, heart rate drops etc - anything is possible and probable.
I don't mean you shouldn't do it, but you shouldn't do it unless it needs to be done. And this guy.. had little warning flags flying all over his posts.
