apparently not a very good one. LOL. His stories were orignally published in "obscure" military/espionage fan mags. Some pub got hold to one of his books, I think his first one, and tracked him down and cut a deal and he "repackaged it and plumped it up". He is also the only writer I heard who has full editorial rights in his contract, that they can't cut a word. Until JK Rowling, he was the highest paid writer in the world.
