Yeah I am volunteering over here in the UK with SSAFA (Forces help organization) I am afraid that the checks are just as thorough here. I already have a CRB clearance (Criminal Records Bureau)as I work in a mental hospital with the elderly and you have to have clearance for that. I have had to have another check done to work with SSAFA. As I am already cleared for my employer then I am allowed to commence work but only if I am accompanied by an experienced case worker. I understand why this is as, we do go to people homes and a lot of them are very vulnerable. I also had to be interviewed in my home by the area corordinator. It must be very frustrating for you, but after the Tsunami there were lots of incidences of people profiting form others distress and the fate of the children who ended up in the hands of paedophiles doesn't bear thinking about.
I am sorry that your first experience has been so negative but don't give up. I have been a volunteer many times especially when my children were young it is very rewarding and you benefit not only from helping others but you acquire skills that stand you in good stead throughout your life.
Good Luck
Maureen
