Have just spoken to my son (he is home on a course at the moment)who is part of 1 Div . The current commander I believe is married not sure if that is the same one.Not that it makes any difference because I dont actually believe that it should matter if you are gay or straight as long as you can do the job. The problem is that at grass routes level the forces are homophobic (you only have to go down town here in Maidstone a military town)not helped by the cases of male rape and suicides at Deepcut.
The Royal Navy will have a presence at the Gay Pride Manchester Festival which is a huge step forward. Last year two women from the Royal Engineers were charged with commiting lewd acts and sent home from Iraq mind you that could be because the pictures appeared all over the front pages of the News of the World.
We are moving forward very slowly over here but at least we are moving forward.
