When we were kids and teenagers we were across the Cdn/USA border easily once or more a mth. Haven't been now in yrs. I remember going once in Univ with friends from school - we were going shopping and pizza. The guy at the border gave us looks until he got to me - middle in the back - once I told him where I lived.... away we went. He knew I lived just minutes away.
Honestly I don't feel any safer because just to fly 90 min btwn Buffalo (crossing into the US at Buffalo and Ft Erie) and Boston I need a passport. What I feel is watched. And that's creepy, disappointing and sad.
