The good guys all start shooting to cover John Wayne (or the hero of the moment) so he can safely make it to the barn or where ever he needs to go to save the day. They aren't shooting at the good guys they are giving them support or maybe helping them get out of harms way--- it they miss and hit a good guy it's called friendly fire and that's not good !!!
